Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Health, has emphasized on the need for MDAs under it’s purview to make judicious use of budgetary allocations and keep clean financial records.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Ferguson Onwo Wednesday stated this during an interactive session with officials of various health institutions in the State as part of it’s oversight function.
In his remarks, Hon. Ferguson Onwo said the constitutional duty of oversight gives lawmakers the right to checkmate the activities of Ministries, Department and Agencies of government so as to ensure they perform optimally for the benefit of Deltans.
Hon. Onwo who represents Isoko South 2 constituency, maintained that it was necessary for institutions within the health sector to not only render quality services to Deltans but also ensure that they access funds already appropriated to them.
Accompanied by other members of the committee including Hon. Festus Okoh, Perkins Umukoro and Matthew Omonade, the Lawmaker stressed on the need for the MDAs to be prudent in their expenditure and secure approvals from relevant authorities in line with the provisions of the law.
He emphasized that the essence of the oversight interaction was not to witch-hunt anyone but to promote good governance in the health sector.
Hon. Onwo who highlighted some of the observations from the records of each institution, urged them to keep detailed financial records so as to avoid ambiguity and discrepancies.
While commending some of the agencies for accessing their budgetary allocation for the year, he urged them to make good use of appropriated funds in solving their challenges.
Hon. Onwo also maintained that the Governor Oborevwori’s More Agenda cut across every sector of the State and enjoined officials of the MDAs in the Health sector to leave up to it’s responsibility by ensuring that they compliment government’s effort.
He further urged them to improve on their Internally Generated Revenue performance and also prepare for the next budget defence season.
Present at the interactive session were the Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, HMB, Dr. Paul Okubor, Director General Delta State Contributory Health Commission, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta and Governing Board Chairman, Dr. Augustine Obidi, Chief Medical Director, Asaba Specialist Hospital, Dr. Peace Ighosevwe, as well as officials of Delta State College of Health Technology, Ufuoma, Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara and Primary Health Care Development Agency.
