The Rivers State Government has approved the extension of the service years for teachers to 65 years or 40 years of service, whichever comes first. The announcement was made during the sixth State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, at the Executive Council Chambers in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
The Head of Civil Service in the state, Dr. George Nwaeke, elaborated on the new policy, explaining that it will be aligned with the federal government’s existing law and regulations. However, the extension will apply only to teachers who are certified professionals by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), ensuring that only qualified individuals benefit from the change.
In addition to the service extension, the Rivers State Government also took decisive steps to address pension and gratuity issues by increasing the monthly allocation for the payment of pensions from N1 billion to N2 billion. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on pensioners and ensure that more retirees receive their benefits in a timely manner.
