Uniport SUG President, Dickson Senibo, Resigns

On Thursday, 21st September 2023, the Student Union President, Comr. Dickson Senibo of University of Port Harcourt communicated his sudden resignation to the Union Senate.

According to his Chief Press Secretary, Comr. Uzoamaka Mordecai, the former President’s resignation is in the best interest of all Rivers State students at home and diaspora.

Following his resignation, the Vice-President, Comr. Faith Onumajuru, was sworn into office as the SUG President by the Chief Judge, Comr. Azundah Hope on Wednesday, 27th September 2023.

The swearing-in was carried out in the presence of the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Chima Wokocha and the Union Senate President, Comr. Uzoamaka Emmanuel.

Until his resignation to pursue his political ambition, Senibo assumed office as elected Union President on the 14th of January, 2023.

• He becomes the second Union President to resign willingly from duty, booting out his top job for higher political ambitions.

• He resigned as SUG President to contest as National President under the umbrella body of all Rivers State students at home and Diaspora, by the name of National Union of Rivers State Students.

• Until his resignation, Senibo served as elected Union President for eight months.

• On two occasions, he sorted out at least 200 students’ first installment school charges and was the only SUG President to plead for multiple students’ fee extensions.

• He organized the first-ever Students’ Union Government Festival Of High Praise and a skills acquisition program for interested students to learn driving, hair-making, media and graphic skills.

• He led over 100 Kalabari students to receive a cash grant in Abonnema, Headquarters of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State on the 9th of March, at Black Duke’s compound.

• Due to his resignation, his former Excos will now champion the unveiling of the Union’s amended Constitution.

The former President, in his resignation letter, appreciated both students and staff and urged them to support his ambition.

“I am grateful for the immense support and love extended to me by both the University’s Management and the student community during my tenure as the Student Union President. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable, shaping my experience and preparing me for the leadership role I am about to undertake at the national level.”
