The Federal Government has announced the settlement of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) owed to academic staff of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the period January to August 2026.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, saying the affected tertiary institutions, including Federal Universities of Agriculture, had been directed to commence payment of the allowance to their academic staff.
Alausa said the development was aimed at addressing concerns over the outstanding allowance and ensuring that academic staff received the benefits due to them.
He, however, said the government was still working to secure funds for the payment of CONTTA to non-academic, or non-teaching, staff of tertiary institutions.
The minister expressed optimism that the required funds for the non-teaching staff would be made available within the next few weeks.
The assurance is expected to draw attention to the concerns of non-teaching staff who have also been awaiting implementation and payment of the allowance alongside their academic counterparts.
Alausa said the Federal Government remained committed to improving the welfare and working conditions of both academic and non-academic staff in tertiary institutions.
He said the payment of the CATA arrears was another indication of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of workers in the education sector.
According to him, the administration is not only prioritising workers’ welfare but is also investing significantly in infrastructure across tertiary, post-basic and basic education institutions.
“This is a president that believes so much in education. So far, he has delivered beyond his campaign promises by ensuring that every single child in this country gets the highest opportunity to education.
