MINUTES/COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE STAKEHOLDERS AND LEADERS MEETING OF THE IJAW YOUTH COUNCIL (IYC) WESTERN ZONE HELD AT ELIKO HOTEL, WARRI, ON SUNDAY, 19TH OCTOBER, 2025
The meeting was convened and facilitated by the Deputy President of Council, Comrade Freedom Atigbi Ph.D in his capacity as the coordinating officer of the Zonal and Clan structures of the Council, as empowered by the IYC Constitution. The primary objective of the meeting was to address and resolve the brewing tension between the Zonal Leadership led by Comrade Nicholas Tamara-denyefa Igarama and the Clan Chairmen Forum under the leadership of Comrade Zikurebai Wazo Oyinkuro.
The meeting commenced with an opening prayer by Miss Ebi Disi Shagamu , former Tuomo Woman Leader. This was followed by an opening remark from Comrade Freedom Atigbi, who emphasized the need for unity and peaceful coexistence between the zonal leadership and the clan structures. He reiterated that the clan structure remains the backbone of the Council and that the purpose of the meeting was not to take sides but to ensure peace, understanding, and stability in the Western Zone, thereby preventing opportunists from exploiting the situation for selfish gains.
In attendance were past and present national and zonal leaders of the Council, members of both the executive and parliamentary arms, as well as other critical stakeholders of the Ijaw Youth Council.
After careful deliberations on the issues presented by the concerned parties, the stakeholders resolved as follows:
1. That the Clan Chairmen should return to their respective clans and reactivate their structures, as many of them have become weak and dormant.
2. That both the Zonal Leadership and the Clan Chairmen should, at all times, maintain open channels of internal communication to prevent misinformation and unnecessary disagreements over issues that could ordinarily be resolved amicably through dialogue.
3. Henceforth, all financial entitlement due to the clans be reviewed and disbursed appropriately without delay .
4. All concerned parties should sheath their sword and work amicably for the good of the Zone and ijaw nation at large .
5. The zonal Leadership, under comrade Nicolas Igrama, should as a matter of urgency consult with members of his executive, stakeholders of the zone and convene a zonal Congress within the shortest possible time.
The meeting ended on a note of renewed commitment to unity, mutual respect, and collective responsibility in advancing the ideals of the Ijaw Youth Council in the Western Zone and beyond.
