Residents of Jakpa Road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area on Wednesday, August 14th, 2024 applauded the efforts of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, and the Ministry of Environment for the flood control measures being put in place through the clearing of blocked drains in the area.
Some residents operating businesses in the area, Omo G. Collection and Mrs. Mbonu Blessing while speaking to DESOPADEC News Crew, expressed their gratitude, saying they count themselves lucky to be beneficiaries of the laudable intervention work.
“We are very happy that the blocked drains are being opened again. Last year, DESOPADEC cleared all the blocked drains in Jakpa Road, drastically reducing the problem of flooding here. People selling and residing in this area are lucky to experience this again this year. We thank Governor Oborevwori, DESOPADEC and the Ministry of Environment for their help. We pray they don’t relent in their efforts,” they said.
The drains clearing work started at Aka Avenue Junction and progressed to Oru Standard Junction by the end of the day.
Mrs. Francisca Atinga, a Director with the Ministry of Environment overseeing the work, said a 5-day time limit was given to complete the job. She added that more workers would be employed so as to meet the deadline and arrangements for debris evacuation were in place.
DESOPADEC Crew visited the canal de-silting site at Agbarho to check the progress of work. The swamp boogy de-silted, cleared and opened up a new canal at Ighofose Street. Residents were happy as the blocked canal was causing flooding issues.
In Sapele, work progressed on Tropical Road with the swamp boogy nearing the discharge point at Diffri Road. However, residents appealed for the swamp boogy to work an additional day or two to link the water to the river for more effective flood control.
