ASABA – Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has signed the Bill for a law to establish good governance accountability commission in the state into Law.
Delta state House of Assembly few months ago concluded legislative actions on Bill for a law to establish good governance accountability commission in the state.
The bill which has the Chairman, Assembly Committee on Public Accounts and Member Representing Ika North East, Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri as lead sponsor, seeks to domesticate activities of the various anti corruption agencies in the country, including EFCC and ICPC.
The law is to deepen the process of accountability in governance as well as fight waste in the system as Deltans have been yearning for a law to check corruption for greater development in the state, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gave the State Legislature powers to make laws for peace and good governance of the state.
The Good Governance and Accountability Commission, when established will entrench transparency, fight corruption, promote accountability, checkmate misappropriation of public funds, as well as place sanctions on erring officers of government or agencies in the state.
Blocking leakages in the finances of the state would result to more money to carry out developmental programmes and projects by the state government, this Law empowers the Commission to investigate activities of statutory institutions of government as well as receive complaints from Deltans.
The law will go a long way in helping to mitigate the prevalence of corruption in the State’s public and civil service, and also to cap up all the integrity laws in the state to enhance transparency, accountability and good governance.
It will check fraudulent and corrupt practices in the State Public and Civil service, particularly misappropriation of Funds by the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, even the Delta State House of Assembly.
The law will strengthen the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity in governance and further build up the confidence of Deltans on the state government.
Any officers of government or agencies in the state caught violating any section or provisions of this Law shall be apprehended or arrested and made to face lawful prosecution by the commission.
It is hoped that this law will strengthen the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity in governance.
One must not fail to commend the patriotic spirit of the Governor Ifeanyi A. Okowa for signing the Bill into Law without reservation.
Kudos to Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri, the House Leadership and honourable members for their frantic efforts to restore sanity to our state Public and Civil service, through this important Law.
