Labour unions in the Federal Capital Territory have mobilised members for a three-day mass protest to demand the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, and the National Association of Health Workers Union in the FCT are leading the protest, scheduled to begin on Monday.
The decision followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Administration to settle the demands of primary school teachers, area council staff, and health workers by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Labour Congress in the FCT.
The demands were contained in a letter dated June 11, 2025.
The labour union had threatened to picket the office of the FCT from Thursday, June 19, 2025, if the authorities failed to begin the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage and the arrears.
Our correspondent, however, gathered that the planned picketing has been shifted to June 23, to enable members of the union to prepare for the protest.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT NUT Chairman, Mohammed Shafas, could not be reached to confirm the development, as our correspondent was informed that he was in a meeting.
