The recent arbitrary increase in rent by landlords, landladies, house agents, and caretakers in Delta State has sparked outrage among residents. The sudden and unjustified hike, often without prior notice, has left tenants struggling to cope with the new financial burden.
In some cases, rents have been increased by up to 70%, with a house that was previously rented for N250 now being demanded at N550. This drastic increase is attributed to the current economic challenges, but residents argue that it is unfair to pass on the burden to tenants.
The use of cheap materials in building construction 10 years ago cannot justify the sudden increase in rent. Residents are calling on the Ministry of Housing, Delta State, to intervene and address this issue. The government must take concrete steps to regulate rent prices and protect tenants from exploitation.
The activities of roadside agents, who extort money from desperate house seekers, must also be curtailed. These agents take advantage of the housing shortage to demand exorbitant fees, further complicating the already challenging situation.
Residents urge the government to establish a rent control board to monitor and regulate rent prices. This will help prevent arbitrary increases and ensure that tenants are not exploited.
The Delta State government must wake up to the plight of its residents and take decisive action to address the housing challenges. By doing so, the government can help mitigate the effects of the economic downturn and ensure that citizens have access to affordable housing.
