The leadership of the Ogulagha Kingdom Youth Council, OKYC, has raised strong alarm and concern over the massive oil spill ravaging the kingdom by a drilling vessel, owned by Brittina U, Nigeria Limited, at Ajakpa Field, OML 90, July 18th, 2024.
While the kingdom sympathizes with Brittina U Nigeria Limited who are partners in progress, growth and development of the kingdom, for the unfortunate incident.
The leadership of the OKYC wish to state that the spill has ravaged the entire ecosystem, aquatic and environment has been devastated.
While addressing the press in Warri, President of OKYC, Comr. Roland Pere-ebi Dede has states that there is no doubt the Brittina U operated flowstation belongs solely to Ogulagha Kingdom and that the oil spill arising from the incident has affected the entire Communities in the kingdom, which includes Ogulagha, Sokebolou, Youbebe, Youkiri, Obotobo 1 & 2, Obuguru, Okuntu, Osain, Abrabebe and others.
According to him, “As peace loving people, we ensure that a JIV be constituted and the needed clean-up and remediation be done”.
“Our people are now in a dead trap because the air they breath-in is so poisonous that respiratory and airborne diseases is now affecting us”
“Aquatic bodies and the entire environment is largely polluted, hereby putting our fish-farmers to live in hunger and squalor “.
“We are also calling on the Federal, State and Local Government to provide relief materials to our people, ensure an adequate compensation is paid.
We also draw the attention of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swing into action and do the needful.
