After over a decade of neglect, the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, is reviving the state fire service to improve emergency response.
As part of this effort, the Governor recently inspected three fire service stations under reconstruction: Mile 1 (Abali Park) Fire Station, Rumuodumaya Fire Sub-Station, and Borokiri Fire Sub-Station, all set to be commissioned in early March 2025.
To enhance firefighting capabilities, the state has also procured advanced fire trucks, with four already delivered and more on the way. These trucks will be distributed across the state to ensure swift responses to emergencies.
Governor Fubara highlighted the need for self-reliance, ending years of dependence on multinationals like Shell, Agip, and Chevron for fire outbreaks. “For over 12 years, Rivers State lacked a functional fire service. This is unacceptable for a government responsible for protecting lives and property,” he said.
The Governor assured residents that the upgraded fire service and new equipment would significantly improve emergency response. He expressed confidence that the facilities would be ready by the March 2025 deadline, noting the progress made by contractors.
This initiative reflects Gov. Fubara’s commitment to effective governance and restoring public trust in state institutions. With this development, Rivers State is taking control of its safety and emergency preparedness.
